The Ways of Translation: Constraints and Liberties of Translating Chinese

This volume intends to explore some open issues about Chinese translation, focusing on a range of texts and authors of different epochs. Conscious of the pragmatic nature of Translation Studies, the authors contribute a rich variety of examples and proposed solutions to actual translational problems; in addition, they attempt to identify some general trends in Chinese translation and to insert them into a more stable theoretical frame. Translation is part of a wider field of cultural interaction with the Chinese world. In this  collection we present the result of research by sinologists and translators, based on their theoretical as well as practical experience, in order to engage with the broader discourse on this interrelationship. By analyzing specific translational phenomena which raise questions of linguistic, literary and social relevance, we aim to provide its readers with a more thorough awareness of the plurality of ways of translating Chinese.
